How to make a simple sling

The sling shown here is quick and easy to make, but in turn does not provide the control and handling as more comlex slings do. In the long run, a Balearic sling, for example, is certainly better. Nevertheless this sling works fine for some first impressions of slinging.

Step 1

The pouch of this sling is made of two straps of leather. A box cutter and a cutting mat are helpful for cutting them out.

Step 2

Cut two straps, each about 1" wide and 5" long.

Step 3

Punch holes into the ends of both straps, for attaching the cords.

Step 4

You can use shoelaces or any other kind of string for the cords.

Step 5

Thread one of the cords through the holes of both straps. Fold it to a small loop and wrap it tightly with yarn. Such a connection has a lower profile than a knot and is more sturdy.

Step 6

Repeat the same with the other side of the pouch. Do, however, swap the two straps when threading the cord through their holes. By that, you get a slightly cupped pouch.

Step 7

For the finger loop, again form a loop at the other end of one of the cords and wrap it with yarn.

Step 8

Finally, add a knot at the end of the other cord.
